An anime adaptation of Manchuria Opium Squad has been announced on the series’ official X account, which has also opened a teaser website. The announcement credits Tsukasa Monma for the original story, Tsurushima for the manga art and Shikako for the original art design. The format, release timing, staff and cast have not been announced.
The manga resumed serialization in Kodansha’s Young Magazine issue 45, released on October 5, 2026, Comic Natalie reported. Artist Shikako died on November 8, 2025, and the series continues under a new arrangement in line with Shikako’s wishes. The new artist, Tsurushima, worked alongside Shikako as an assistant to Yasuhisa Hara, Shikako’s mentor, and Shikako is now credited for the original art design.
The issue carries chapter 216, drawn by Shikako, and chapter 217, the first drawn by Tsurushima, along with messages from Tsurushima, Monma and Shikako’s family.
Set in Manchuria in the Showa era, the crime suspense story follows Isamu Higata, a timid Japanese soldier who becomes involved in making opium. It began on Comic DAYS in April 2020 and moved to Young Magazine in September 2021. To mark the return, every chapter is free to read on Yanmaga Web until October 11.
