Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO, the newest film in the Gundam SEED series, opens in Japanese theaters on January 15, 2027, the official website announced, alongside a teaser visual centered on Shinn Asuka and a new trailer.
The film is a prequel leading into Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, which passed 5 billion yen at the box office and 3 million admissions, a record for a theatrical Gundam release. It brings to the screen a scenario that series composers Chiaki Morosawa and Shigeru Morita and director Mitsuo Fukuda wrote while SEED FREEDOM was being planned, after SEED DESTINY aired.
Story
After the collapse of Durandal’s Destiny Plan, which would have set people’s fates by their genes, the world peace monitoring organization COMPASS is being founded around Cagalli, Chief Representative of the Orb Union. In C.E. 74, with the great war over, Shinn still cannot find his own path. Then mobile suits that fought through the war are transferred from ZAFT to COMPASS’s provisional base on Onogoro Island, and that night the Strike Freedom Gundam is stolen. To stop the incident from spreading and to take back the stolen machine, Shinn and the others return to battle.

Leonard Valway, who first appeared in the novel Gekko no Walkure written as a bonus for SEED FREEDOM, appears in an animated work for the first time. Mitsuo Fukuda directs, with character design and chief animation direction by Hisashi Hirai, mechanical design by Kunio Okawara and others, and music by Toshihiko Sahashi. Sunrise produces, and Bandai Namco Filmworks and Shochiku distribute. The Strike Freedom Gundam and Infinite Justice Gundam return, joined by a new mobile suit, the Gouf Ignited Custom.

- A fan vote, the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Series Grand Prix 2026, began on October 9.
- Kenichi Suzumura, Daisuke Ono, Tomokazu Seki and director Fukuda will appear on the film’s stage at GUNDAM-Con2027.
- A soundtrack CD and related merchandise, including Gunpla, METAL ROBOT SPIRITS and Ichiban Kuji items, were announced.
