Maebashi Witches: Majo Minarai no Emoemories, a film reworking the TV anime Maebashi Witches, opens in theaters across Japan on October 23, 2026. The official website has released six new stills, along with comments from director Junichi Yamamoto and series writer Erika Yoshida.
The original anime, a 12-episode series that aired in spring 2025, is set in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, and follows five high school girls training to become witches. The film condenses it into about two hours with a new structure and direction, new cuts, new Witchverse scenes and newly added songs, and much of the dialogue was re-recorded.
Erika Yoshida, who handled series composition and every script for Bocchi the Rock! (2022) and wrote NHK’s morning drama Tora ni Tsubasa (2024), wrote the new parts and worked with the director on added lines.
Junichi Yamamoto said the film should be easy to follow for first-time viewers, while fans who know the series well will hear how much the cast’s acting and singing have grown. Erika Yoshida said the theme of the story is “What’s wrong with staying as you are?”, with the caveat that staying put also takes effort, so the girls choose their own way forward or not, and that viewers will come to love all five.
The film is holding stage greetings with its cast at United Cinemas Toyosu through November 19; see our earlier article for the schedule.
